Music Review – Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend
Upper West Side indie-rock darlings, Vampire Weekend, more than live up to the hype on their fetching self-titled debut. This catchy collection of upbeat tunes about grammar, architecture, and campus life, unabashedly appropriates everything from Afro-pop and New Wave, to Chamber music. It remains to be seen if Vampire Weekend can withstand the test of time. At the moment though, they are the “it” band to beat, and after repeated listens, Vampire Weekend still sounds fresh and effortless.

Charming and easy melodies flow freely on Paper Rival’s self-titled EP. The instrumentals are maintained with a clean and simple sound that serves to pinpoint Jake Rolleston’s vocals. Rolleston’s gossamer-like voice is balanced with solid rhythms and choruses that steadily climb to a crescendo then gracefully melt away on each track.

Whether you know it or not, you’ve probably seen Patrick Daughters’ work. After years of making a name for himself in the music video world, he hit it big when his collaboration with indie-rocker Feist (on the video for “1,2,3,4”) was picked up for use in an iPod Nano commercial. The video, which didn’t contain a single cut, may have gotten his name out there, but Daughters is no one trick pony.
