Backstage Army of Me - movmnt magazine
One name that has become synonymous with Hotel Cafe and the Hotel Cafe Tour is Nashville native Cary Brothers. Having started as an opener for Gary Jules, Brothers has been there from the beginning. With a voice somewhere between Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and the Deftones' Chino Moreno, Brothers has a penchant for imbuing the loneliness in his songs with a certain kind of comfort, where longing and desire are also home to a privileged state of beauty.
His straight-to-the-heart approach to songwriting was enough to grab the attention of Zach Braff, who not only included his songs on both the Garden State and Last Kiss soundtracks, but also directed Brothers's latest video, for the yearning track Ride. His songs have since appeared on such hit shows as Scrubs, Bones, Smallville, Grey's Anatomy, and ER. But despite his newfound success, Brothers still looks at Hotel Cafe as a second home that he'll always be a part of. There's total support and collaboration and none of the competitive crap that fuels so many people in Los Angeles,he says. We're all friends first and musicians second.
Brothers has also added another title to his belt, co-director of the Hotel Cafe Tour. I kept seeing all these great and mostly unrecognized people playing at this room every night, he says, and I realized that individually no one is all that famous or successful, but collectively we could pull out some people if we did a national tour. And so he did. Collaborating with Hotel Cafe proprietor Marko Shafer, Josh Neuman, and Marty Diamond, it quickly became Cary's operation to keep things together on the road. And with (RED) on board the objective reaches even further. (RED) got involved with the tour because a lot of the (RED) team hangs out with us at the hotel and listens to the music, says Brothers. I watched the development of their company and knew that it would be a good pairing. It's cool enough to be able to tour across the country with friends, and it's even better to do it for a cause.
